Al Hinkle

Al Hinkle, perhaps best known as “‘Big Ed’ Dunkel,” the pseudonymous character in Jack Kerouac’s On the Road based on him. In real life, Hinkle was close friends with Kerouac, Neal Cassady and his family, and his reminiscences of their lives and times together are truly exceptional. Some are recounted in his self-published memoir, Last Man Standing. As the title implies, he is the last living male participant in the events of On the Road.
